Thomas Magyar, the film’s executive producer, said yesterday that the movie, The Great Khmer Empire, would be set in the Angkorian period and aim to rival historic epics such as Hollywood films Troy and Alexander.
“This is a big movie. The estimated budget is $70 million,” he said.
Producers planned to approach Angelina Jolie to play the female lead, and John Cena, a seven-time World
Wrestling Entertainment champion and actor, to play the male lead.
Magyar, who is also CEO of the International Bodyguard and Security Services' Association in South East Asia, said the film would be produced by the company Parable Studio Green Asia, a collaboration among filmmakers from Cambodia, Hungaria and Hollywood.
He said that although the company had not yet secured all of the necessary funding for the project, he expected the film to be completed within the next three years.
“We have already started the storyboard and the script,” he said, and added that Hungarian director Gabor Forgacs and Cambodian director Thourn Sinan had already “come aboard” the project.
Som Sokun, secretary of state at the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, said yesterday that the ministry had not yet given official permission for the film, but that its general policy was to encourage foreign productions.
“We are happy to welcome the Hollywood film production,” he said.
Magyar said he planned to meet with officials at the ministry on Monday to discuss the project further.
The announcement came at a press conference held at the Ministry of Information and attended by American actor and world karate champion Tony Schiena.
According to the Internet Movie Database, Schiena is known as “the bad boy of karate” due to “his unorthodox training methods and aggressive fighting style”.
It was unclear exactly what role Schiena would play in the production of The Great Khmer Empire, but he said that he intended to “help in whatever way I can”.
Schiena said he also planned to work on environmental, anti-human trafficking and other projects during his stay in the Kingdom..

I can't wait for the movie to come out. Thai will no longer say that angkor wat and preah vehear used to belomg to them ever again. In the next few years, cambodia will be the hottest spot for tourism in south east asia. We have lots of thing that thai don't have such as angkor wat, preah vihear temple, tonle sarb lake( the biggest lake in the world), beaches etc.... our cities are getting bigger and bigger every year, modern malls, fancy restaurants, world class hotels, casinos,resorts are growing super fast all over the country. I told all my friends about Cambodia, how great it was and would be again. I save people general knowledges about Khmer everyday. Before, when I told them I am Cambodian, they seemed unfamiliar. Now, they even know that Cambodia is great and awesome. It is ridiculous that there is only me in my high school Cambodian. If they were to cast no names Cambodians a lead role then it would just be another "indie" movie that someone could care less about. Now if you cast well known actors, word would spread. Then again this could be your next "Slumdog Millionaire". As long as they portray us Cambodians right then so be it. This would be interesting if and when it does happen.
Like you, I'm also Kon Khmer and proud of it. Also, I can't wait to see this movies. Blaming on others is not the key. If you're going to blame? Blame it on our own Ancestor and our Government. We can make movies, write books about The Great Khmer Empire to remind ourselves and educate our kids but we can't get our land back. We can't even keep what little land we have now. Take a look at our current government workers and the person that is in charge of the country for over 20 years (should I mention his name?). Almost non of them care for the future of the country. They're all about filling their pockets with $$$$$$. You have enough $$$$$ to through at them, they will probably sign the land over to you. Our land as we speak is being bought out section by section by outsiders. I'm wishing that in the very near future, the well educated young generation will take over and make Cambodia great again. Once upon a time their was a Great Khmer Empire and don't forget that but let try to keep what little land we have now instead of auctioning it off to outsiders.
us$70 million is considered a low budget. most hollywood films have an acerage budget between $250 - $500 million
i think if they put another actress like Chanty Sok who played in the movie "The Fighter" to play as the queen of Angkor she will fit the role cuz she is Khmer and she is very Beautiful once you guys checkout her i think you mite change your minds check her out her name is Chanty Sok google her for pictures

Khmers are not one races, but many. Indians (dark), Polinesians (brown), Mongolians/Chinese, (lighter), and Europeans who were traders in SEAsia. Many of them were Dutch, Portugaise, Spanish, then French.
I knew because I am also Khmer.My DNA résultats comprises: Polynesians, Indian, Mongolians and Mcedonian (Grèek in Europe).
But the facts the majority of Khmers are of Polynesians decent.
It's so difficult to blame them when about 85% are living in poverty. So they have to earn their livings. If they spend all to collège for their future acting career, they cannot survive. Unless they may be discoverd by the Hollywood agents. To be discovered the person has to look kind of unique to fit what they are looking for. It is not so much about beautiful face, but of course Height is required. Many people were discoveref on the train, market, Mall or just while walking dog. Yeahh ÉDUCATION is a Must at lleast can read, write from High School.
